Friendly Baseball Rivalries in the Workplace

Yesterday Hubby's boss told him to come to work an hour late since he was going to have to stay late for a meeting. Usually he's one of the first people in the parking lot. Yesterday, he got to park by the resident Chicago Cubs's fan. (Now I just had a ten-minute stress break over how exactly to type Cubs. Apostrophe-s, apostrophe only? If I were a newspaper, apparently I would have done only an apostrophe from what I read. But I'm not. So determining that the Chicago Cubs is a singular noun since they are a team and not plural as a group, I would apostrophe-s. Maybe it's the homeschool mom in me that felt the need to share all that with you. Otherwise it was the digressing, talking, blogging chick.)

Just in case you aren't a baseball fan and don't know, the Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are rivals. And we love the Cardinals. Also a singular team.

Today Hubby got an email of their vehicles parked next to each other.

Hope you can see it better up close.

Buttermilk Biscuits — 10 Thumbs Up From My Pickiest!

A few weeks ago, Amy at The Finer Things in Life posted a buttermilk biscuit recipe link on her Menu Plan Monday from Learning the Frugal Life. I've been looking for a good biscuit recipe for more than a year, and I wanted something that didn't use a baking mix and preferably didn't use shortening.

I'm going to reprint the recipe here from Learning the Frugal Life rather than just giving you the link (if you do pop over there, hers are more brown than mine, but I like a lightly browned biscuit that is not hard on the bottom). Let me just say that I will no longer have to look for a biscuit recipe. And my pickiest, Caboose, gave it 10 thumbs up. Since we were eating them for lunch, yes, lunch, the four kids and me had to all put our thumbs up around the table.

Buttermilk Biscuits
from Learning the Frugal Life

2 cups all purpose flour
1 T baking powder
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup butter, shortening or margarine
(of course I used butter, softened in the microwave until it was the consistency of shortening)
3/4 cup buttermilk

In a bowl stir together all dry ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center. Add buttermilk and stir just till dough clings together.

On a lightly floured surface knead dough gently for 10-12 strokes. Roll or pat dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter (I used a glass) dipping in flour between cuts (I didn't do). I'm also lazy and only try to do one dough re-roll, so sometimes the edges aren't perfectly circular when I get close to the dough edge.

Place biscuits on greased baking sheet (I used my Pampered Chef stone so I didn't have to). Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Makes 10-12

I made two batches so I'd have leftovers. Oddly enough, the first batch made 11 and the second batch made 12. Next time I'll make it all together, but for the first time I wanted to make it just like the recipe was written so I could see exactly how it was supposed to be.

And if you don't have buttermilk on hand, which I don't a lot of times, you can put a tablespoon of lemon juice in a one cup measuring cup and then add milk to equal one cup. Since this calls for 3/4 cup, I suppose you could just use 3/4 T lemon juice in a 3/4 cup measuring cup and add milk to equal 3/4 cup. I see no reason why not. No need to throw away perfectly good milk. I think you're supposed to let it sit for a few minutes to let it activate or something, too. Don't really know why I think that, but I usually do because it seems like I read it once.

If you like a good biscuit or two, or like me, five, make these. Or if you have a big family, more than one batch so you can have five.

Menu Plan Monday — May 11th

Last week we had two really good new recipes that are without a doubt keepers. Even my boys didn't complain and thought they were good.

The first one was "Really Good" Noodles and Chicken and it's name did not disappoint.

I could use adjectives like fantastic, yummy, or scrumptious instead, but we'll just go with the original. I doubled it for my family and had the leftover noodles for lunch by themselves the next day with a little garlic salt sprinkled on. The chicken would be fantastic on top of a salad just as well as the noodles. It's really pretty multi-purpose. I did not add the roma tomatoes or the capers called for in the original recipe.

The Chicken Parmesan was as good as any I've had before, and it really was pretty simple to make. It's hard to find something that tastes as good as something you've eaten out before, but this one really was yummy. I'd definitely recommend it.

Monday — Clean out the fridge and pantry. Sad thing is, I have no idea what is there.

Tuesday — Spaghetti.

WednesdayCrispy Chicken Tenders. I already bought what I needed for these last week, so I'm set here.

Thursday — Sam's Club Pizza. We never had that last week, so we'll go easy this night.

FridayFarmer's Breakfast.

Saturday — Leftovers, or I'll have to plan something later.

Sunday — Eat out since we ate in all week!

Go visit The Organizing Junkie for more great ideas.

Birding 101 (for novice birders)

1. Go with experienced birders

2. who know their birds

3. who don't mind sharing expensive birding binoculars with you

4. and all four of your children

5. and have enough to go around counting their parents' binoculars

6. and don't mind pointing out lots of birds to you that you would never see otherwise

7. and don't mind telling you what bird you found when you say, "I see a little bird there."
(By the end of the second day, Hubby, Buddy, and Sparky were getting pretty good at identifying some of the warblers. I on the other hand was lucky to find them through the binoculars with my new progressive lenses, and the rest of the time I was entertaining the child who thought it was the worst day of his life, two days in a row.)

Photos of the female cardinal, male red-winged blackbird, and American robin, all banded and being released at Magee Marsh in Ohio. It was nearly impossible to get pictures of birds in the wild, so that's all I have.

Get 'er Done

Sounds like something Tow Mater from Disney's Cars would say.

Or maybe that Rascal Flatts would sing.

In my corner of the world, it's what the subdivision ladies do the first Wednesday of every month. Except that in my corner of the world the subdivision is called the sub, kind of like every carbonated beverage is called pop.

We take what we would like to 'get done' to the host's house, and socialize. I'm trying to remember more than five names. I know the two across the street, our eye doctor, and two other ladies. I've met most of the ladies twice, and a few years ago I would have the majority of the names down by now. Getting old is killing my brain cells.

This is what I took last month to Get er' done night:

I had to carry it all in one of those heavy-duty reusable Whole Foods bags. Heavy, indeed!

This really makes me look like quite the magazine/catalog girl, which I'm not. It had just gotten a bit out of hand and backed up since the apartment and the move. They just got thrown aside for later.

My goal at Get 'er Done was to go through them, tear out the recipes, design ideas, articles, or whatever I wanted to keep, and flip through the catalogs to make sure I wasn't missing anything, which is always a bad idea.

I got through four. Yep, four.

It took me several hours the next day watching Matlock and Clean House to go through them all. Because really, it needed done.

And another day, I'll show you what I do with all those torn out pages, because today I have to plan for tonight's Get 'er Done.

And it needs to be more productive than the last.

I'm thinking about taking a little Christmas ornament to cross-stitch. I started it, oh, eons ago, and I pick it up every so often. Problem is, I'm not sure I can see it without the progressive lens glasses that I ordered that are on their way.

Umm-hmm, you read that right. Good news is, since I'm so horribly near-sighted and my glasses correct my away vision, I can still see up close if I don't have my glasses on. Or I look under them. Tricky, I know.

But I have nothing else to take to Get 'er Done that I actually think I can get done.

And I really want to have something to show for it.

Menu Plan Monday — May 4th

This will be an easy week since I don't have to plan for Friday or Saturday (we're going to Ohio and birding, and I'll have to let you know exactly how that goes) and then Sunday is Mother's Day, so we'll eat out. And of course I don't want to leave leftovers in the refrigerator when I leave town, so Wednesday and Thursday are going to be simple days, too. I love this week!

Monday"Really Good" Noodles and Chicken. Sara at Simply Sara had this recipe on her menu a few weeks ago and it looked good, so I'm going to try a new recipe this week. Get ready, boys!

TuesdayChicken Parmesan. Actually two new recipes, boys.

Wednesday — We'll only have the boys, so we'll be having Sam's Club pizza for dinner.

Thursday — Hot dogs. That way no leftovers.

Friday and Saturday — Out of town.

Sunday — Eat out since it's Mother's Day.

Organizing the Master Bedroom Closet

Let me just start by saying that anyone who has to do a serious clean-up and organization of any closet less than six months after moving into a house is in need of help, especially if they claim to be a normally organized person. Yes, you can just read me into that sentence.

Of course, there would seem to be a very good reason for some of this disorganization. In our house it has a name.

Baseball Cards.

There were two things I was looking forward to when we finally moved into a nice, big house. One was not having anything under my beds, because I didn't want anything there and for the last 20+ years I've had to store things there for lack of other places to put things.

Two was not having baseball cards in my master bedroom closet. Now it might have been a good idea to share this with Hubby, but then I would have gotten the, "Then where do you propose I put them," comment. And at the time I hadn't put much thought into it.

But when we started carrying things in the house and Hubby handed off a box of cards to Sparky and said, "Take these to my closet," I physically cringed. What was I to do? Because while we have a nice, big house, we don't have an excess of closet storage. Yes, we have a basement, but it's not finished, and it's not really ideal for baseball card storage. Neither is the garage.

So if I wanted them out of my closet, I had to find a place for them. Enter The Organizing Junkie's closet round-up and Hubby gone out of town for a week, and I was in business.

Here are the before pictures of my closet, and I'll admit right up front that it's not just the baseball cards.

Since I invaded another closet in this re-do, I'll go ahead and show you before pictures of it too. It's a closet that is in our rec room, a room basically the size of our three-car garage that it is built over. It has a wire hanging closet shelf that the builder put in. I've used it primarily for toy tub storage.

The first thing I did was move the blue tubs down to the basement, then I stacked the four clear tubs on top of each other. I had some stackable shelving that's made for shoes from our old military quarters that we'd been storing in the garage and not using. We'd actually used it to store Buddy's baseball card books on their sides when we lived in Virginia, but we weren't using them now. I pulled them up into the left side of this rec room closet for the majority of Hubby's larger baseball card boxes, and then put some of the odds and ends on the top along with the statuesque little men.

I stacked the vaults, which are longer, in the open floor space between the shelves and the plastic bins on the right side.

After I moved out all the baseball cards, except for two vaults I left on the top shelf, I was able to clean out and organize the rest of my closet. I did not empty the closet out like The Organizing Junkie suggested, but remember I had lived here less than six months!

Here are pictures of the finished master bedroom closet:

In the picture above, t
hat's my clothes hamper you see in the far left tucked under my short clothes, and then my little (Ikea) step stool since I'm a shorty. My white duvet cover with my winter weight (Ikea!) duvet are stored up on the top shelf.

In the picture below, you can see my upstairs tool box down on the floor where all those baseball cards used to live (plus some empty space!).

The cubbies on the wire rack basically serve as linen closet storage for shampoos, soaps, and hygiene items. Um, because there is no linen closet. You probably already saw my towels up on the shelf in the first picture.

If you close the door, here is where my purse stash is located.

I'm saving up for an Elfa closet system, like maybe in a year or two. But for now, it's clean and I can walk in without stepping on anything, and I like that a lot.

And the fact that the baseball cards aren't in there make me so happy I can't even find the words to adequately express it. The fact that Hubby has been back in town for about four hours and hasn't noticed doesn't bode well. I guess when he reads the post he'll know.

Go visit Laura, The Organizing Junkie, to see more closet and cupboard makeovers.
