Biscuit Jar

Or do you say bisquit?

This little biscuit jar came from an antique shop in downtown St. James, Missouri. My grandparents used to come visit us when Hubby was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, which was about three hours from our home town in Arkansas. When Hubby was overseas in Saudi Arabia in the early '90s, they came to visit me at least once. We walked the shops downtown one Saturday.

I wouldn't have known this was a biscuit jar unless my grandma had told me. She had a long-time friend that had a large collection. I just thought it was cute when I saw it in the store so they bought it for me that day.

It's missing the handle that would have gone from the knobs across the top. They were usually in a woven style. It is from Japan, and from looking at others on ebay it is majolica and probably dates around the '20s. Once I found another one exactly like it, but the auction ended when I wasn't at home and I didn't win it.

It has some yellow staining that makes it look dirty in the picture, but it isn't, and even though there aren't any cracks there is crazing all over the jar and lid.

I still think it's just as cute as can be.

I'm not much of a knick-knack kind of girl, but this is one of those treasures that will be with me forever.

"...will be with me forever." that's one phrase I can never see myself ever saying...I guess I'm pretty flaky.

Anyhow, is a biscuit jar the same as a cookie jar to you? Because biscuits to me are nothing like a cookie. Biscuits are a fluffy pastry that people eat like a bun with soup. I've never heard of a biscuit jar before.

But if i were to...it would be a biscuit and not a bisquit...jar. hehe is there such a spelling as: bisquit?

This is maybe a stupid question but...In Canada, I pronounce biscuit: "biss kit" do you too?

Demara ~ you made me think really hard, but I do say it the way you do.

And honestly, I have no idea what they termed a biscuit, although if you look them up on ebay sometimes they will be described as biscuit/cookie jar.

I don't think that bisquit is recognized as a spelling for biscuit, but I've seen people spell it that way. If I look it up on ebay I have to do two searches, one with biscuit and another one with bisquit.

I remember now that you like Japanese things. I can't help you with the baby though.

I've never had a biscuit jar. I had an antique store for about 15 years back about 16 years ago and I remember having a couple in the shop but none as pretty as this one. Your a lucky girl!

I googled biscuit jar and got much information. It seems to be the same as a cookie or cracker jar. Yours is very pretty. I saw several antique ones. What I stash in my jar is candy.

My blog friends from Great Britian call cookies "biscuits". I think a biscuit barrel is a cookie jar.
You have a beautiful one there and I like the way there is a wonderful memory attached to it!

We must have been on the same wave length with you posting about yours and me putting a picture on my sidebar! :)

I say cookie because around here a bicuit is something you have with gravy : ) No matter what you call it, it is a very pretty and cheerful jar!

I was going to say- as Betsy already did- that here in the UK a biscuit is a cookie. Could be term for it that originated here.

Lovely biscuit jar, Kayren.

Cheers!

I was going to say the same thing -- in the UK, cookies are called biscuits. So I imagine that's where the name "biscuit jar" originated.

This is so pretty! And what a wonderfully warm memory of your grandparents' love and generosity to go along with it.

God bless,
Mrs.T
