The Thanksgiving Bird

We have multiple ways to drive to church. Most of them involve various back and side roads, and many of them involve some dirt roads. Depending on which way you go and how much dirt road you want, you can cut off a lot of time.

You go the main roads, like expressway and highway, it would take you some serious time to get from our house to church. Like I would need to leave right now to get there tomorrow. Okay, something like 45 minutes, more in rush hour. We never, ever go that way.

There is one way to go where you can take no dirt roads (except out the back of our subdivision), and it takes about 20 minutes if you hit every light just right.

When you take one of the ways with dirt roads, you're down to 12 minutes on a perfect trip, or somewhere around 15 to 18 minutes. And you are very likely to see some wildlife on the way, sometimes alive, sometimes not.

Okay. Opportunity past. That's what Hubby said. I saw these turkeys — probably two females and their 12 chicks while taking the boys to VBS. Hubby said I should've hit them and we would have had plenty to eat on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Day, Valentine's Day, etc. My only problem — who would have plucked them and taken out all the parts that you don't want? And aren't some of those parts poisonous if you don't get them out?

I so sound like a city girl. That could explain why I hate camping.

And Hubby was just kidding about hitting them. Unless of course they fly into my side window.

That's a big family! We have a lot of them on our side of the state too, but I'm with you. No plucking cleaning...

No camping or plucking turkeys for me, either! LOL!

Can't believe you can take the highway and have a 45 minutes trip to church...or dirt roads and get it down to nearly 12 minutes! People usually hop on the highway to save time!

Um, I think there are certain fish that have parts that can kill you but I'd never heard that about turkeys. Now I'm gonna have to call my Dad (the hunter) and find out. I'm sure he'd be happy with "field dressing" instructions should you actually get your T-day turkey early without the aid of a gun!

I don't think I've seen turkeys in the wild. Random. I'm a city girl, too...the thought of eating an animal you saw as an animal grosses me out!

Wow that's odd. to see turkey on the side of the road with all their chicks?!?! weird. haven't seen that before. But I have seen a Peacock wandering the side of a busy highway, with no wildlife or plants around.

It was a VERY pretty peacock and we had no idea how it go THERE! At least it was alive. We hoped a truck came by to pick it up and take it to the zoo! :)

Bonnie - you know, I was watching a hunting show with Hubby once (yes, once) and it happened to be a guy showing what to do with your deer if you wanted to get all the meat out yourself. That's opposed to taking it to the special meat guy who does it for you for a fee, which is what my in-laws do as far as I know. Is that called field dressing, Bobbi?

So he's got this deer hanging from a tree and is explaining how to cut innards out while telling you not to puncture the bladder, because for some reason that will ruin all the meat. There may have been another organ involved too. I wasn't paying too much attention to the details, knowing that I wasn't going to need that knowledge.

I'm just thinking maybe it applies to the birds, too. Anybody smarter than me and know?
