This was the first Catherine Coulter book I have read. I love mystery books, and I would definitely say after reading this book that cozy mysteries are more my genre than thriller mysteries. I would compare this book to something from Christian fiction writer Terri Blackstock, with the added elements you wouldn't find in a Christian book.
This book is a two-in-one that included the first two books in the FBI series, The Cove and The Maze. Both had an element of mystery in the plot as well as the part that makes it more of a thriller. Coulter is a good writer, but as with many secular works, there are additions to the story that just don't have to be there. It's kind of like going to a movie, and they throw in a s*x scene, but the movie would be great without it, and it's really uncomfortable with it. That's the way I felt with both of these stories. There was a little bit of s*x thrown in (not like I think you would find in a romance novel, but not that I know because I don't read the heavy stuff) but I just thought it was unnecessary to the story lines.
I also have a little trouble reading about brutal crimes and not dwelling on that for months after I finish a book. I don't think that this series is the best for me to read based on my personality. I think that I need to stick to lighter mysteries, the good old Nancy Drew for grown-ups. But if you like the mystery/thriller type books, I think that you would enjoy the Coulter FBI series (currently 12 books).

I know what you mean about some mystery series--I can't stomach the gory details either. Call me weak, but I don't care. It's more about the hunting for clues and finding out *whodunit*!
I don't like gore either. I'm personally more impressed with a writer who can imply things I don't want to know about- gore and sex included- without giving me the details. That's takes much more talent than simply copying down the details.

I enjoyed reading your review. Catherine Coulter is a suspenseful author and I like her books - a little s*x and gore don't bother me! I have one of hers on my Fall Into Reading list too but haven't made it there yet!
